Texas School Health Profiles

The Texas School Health Profiles (Profiles) is a system of surveys assessing school health policies and practices in Texas. Profiles surveys are conducted every two years by the Texas Department of State Health Services among middle and high school principals and lead health education teachers.  Approximately 500 schools are chosen at random to participate by completing a principal and lead health education teacher questionnaire.

School Health Profiles
Profiles monitors the status of
  • School health education requirements and content
  • Physical education and physical activity
  • School health policies related to HIV infection/AIDS, tobacco-use prevention, and nutrition
  • Asthma management activities
  • Family and community involvement in school health programs
  • School health coordination

Texas School Health Profiles is made possible by cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

How are Profiles data used?

Education and health officials use Profiles data to:

  • Describe school health policies and practices
  • Compare them across jurisdictions
  • Identify professional development needs
  • Plan and monitor programs
  • Support health-related policies and legislation
  • Seek funding
  • Garner support for future surveys

Child sexual abuse prevention specialists use Profiles data to:

  • Plan for training initiatives in schools
  • Look at gaps between what is being taught in schools and student knowledge
  • Strategize how to eradicate child sexual abuse in Texas
