Tobacco Prevention and Control Program - Public Health Region 6/5 South

Purpose

The Texas Tobacco Prevention and Control Program aims to reduce the toll of tobacco use on the health, safety, and well-being of all Texans
 

Goals

  • Prevent tobacco use initiation among youth and young adults.
  • Promote quitting among youth and adults.
  • Eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Reduce and eliminate tobacco-related disparities among population groups.
  • Develop and maintain statewide capacity to support a sustainable tobacco prevention and control program.

According to the latest county health rankings, Texas has an overall adult cigarette smoking rate of 13%. In Public Health Region 6/5 South, all 16 counties except for Fort Bend have higher smoking rates compared to the state average (see below).

For Healthcare institutions:

  • Trainings: Ask-Advise-Refer Approach, Referral to the Texas Tobacco Quitline
  • Technical support for tobacco-free policies and initiatives

For Workplaces:

  • Technical support for tobacco-free policies and initiatives.
  • Provide presentations regarding the benefits of a tobacco-free workplace.

For Schools:

  • Provide training on CATCH My Breath Curriculum to school staff.
  • Educate students on the consequences of tobacco products.

For the Community:

  • Conduct community presentation on the health effects of tobacco-use.
  • Technical support with tobacco-free policies.
