Oral Health Banner image

The Regional Dental Team (RDT) for Public Health Regions 6/5 South and Region 7 supports the DSHS Oral Health Improvement Program mission to promote oral health through collaboration, data collection, education, and preventive services.

As a part of this mission, the data collected provides a snapshot and opportunity to learn about the oral health status of Texans.

Smiles in Schools (SiS)

Smiles in Schools (SiS) is a public oral health program that provides education and limited preventive services for low-income, underserved preschool and school-aged children in Texas. RDTs travel to school campuses across Texas to provide limited preventive services. Visit our School Nurses and Administrators webpage for more information.

Services:

  • Oral Health Education
  • Dental Screenings
  • Dental Sealants
  • Fluoride Varnish
  • Letter with findings and recommendations for parents

Note: The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) promotes the Dental Home concept. Services provided by DSHS Regional Dental Teams are limited and do not replace regular visits to the dentist.

Dental Health Data and Reporting

RDTs also collect and analyze oral health data. This data helps them learn about the oral health status of Texans. Visit the Dental Health Data and Reporting webpage to check out some of our data briefs.

Smiles for Moms and Babies

RDTs also promote oral health for pregnant women and babies. Taking care of your teeth and gums is safe and smart. See our Dental Care During Pregnancy - Smiles for Moms and Babies webpage to learn more.

Collaboration

RDTs work with regional public health programs and interested community partners to offer limited preventive dental services in schools. This is often through a School Based Dental Program.

Community Water Fluoridation

Community water fluoridation is safe and the most cost-effective way to deliver fluoride to people of all ages, race/ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. Fluoridated water improves the oral health of Texans and helps prevent tooth decay. To learn more about community water fluoridation, check out our webpage on Fluoride and Water Fluoridation.
