How big of a problem is tooth decay?
Over 67% of Texas 3rd graders have experienced tooth decay. Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, but the good news is that it is preventable.
What is Texas Department of State Health Services doing about this?
DSHS has a program called Smiles in Schools (SiS) to help prevent cavities and keep kids healthy. SiS works with schools and preschools to set up oral health prevention clinics on campus.
The clinics provide services to students from vulnerable populations who may be considered at high risk for developing tooth decay. The goals of the clinics are to help prevent cavities, educate students, inform parents, and to collect oral health data.
What services are available?
- Oral health education
- Dental screenings
- Dental sealants
- Fluoride varnish
Note: Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) promotes the Dental Home. Services provided by DSHS regional dental teams do not replace regular visits to the dentist.
Who provides these services?
DSHS Regional Dental teams provide services throughout Texas. These teams work with the school nurse or administrator to coordinate the clinic. Check the Regional Dental Team Contact list for the team in your area.
