Smiles in Schools

The Smiles in Schools Program (SiS) helps prevent cavities and keep kids healthy. SiS works with schools and preschools to set up oral health prevention clinics on campus. The clinics provide services to students from vulnerable populations who may be considered at high risk for developing tooth decay.  SiS video thumb

Our goal is to:

  • Help prevent cavities
  • Educate students
  • Inform parents
  • Collect oral health data

Learning the Facts

How big of a problem is tooth decay?

Over 67% of Texas 3rd graders have experienced tooth decay. Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, but the good news is that it is preventable.

Our Services

Awareness today can create a healthier tomorrow for our children. Smiles in Schools (SiS) provides school-based dental clinics in schools and preschools. Read more about these clinics. Contact the Regional Dental Team in your area to start planning an SiS clinic.

What services are available?

  • Dental screenings
  • Dental sealants

Who provides these services?

DSHS Regional Dental Teams provide services throughout Texas. These teams work with the school nurse or administrator to coordinate the clinic. If you are a school nurse or administrator, learn more about hosting an SiS dental clinic.

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) promotes the Dental Home. Services provided by DSHS Regional Dental Teams do not replace regular visits to the dentist.
