In 2009, the Texas Legislature amended Texas Health and Safety Code, Chapter 33 to create the Newborn Screening Advisory Committee (committee). In 2013, Legislature amended Texas Health and Safety Code, Section §33.017, to establish the minimum number of committee members.
The committee advises the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) on strategic planning, policy, rules, and services related to newborn screening. The committee may also recommend DSHS require additional newborn screening tests. The DSHS commissioner appoints committee members.
