Test Description Fecal coliforms are used as a sanitary index for seawater in the shellfish growing area.  A-1 medium is used as a confirmatory procedure for fecal coliform testing.

Storage/Preservation Prior to Shipping
  • Bay waters are collected in clean, sterile, and watertight bottles. An appropriate bottle should be used to contain at least 110 mL of sample and allow head space for shaking.
  • Whenever possible, the test should be initiated immediately after the samples are checked in. If not tested immediately, samples must be kept between 0°C and 10°C until examined. In no case shall samples be tested after 30 hours of collection
  • A separate sample should be included as a temperature control. Temperature control should be below 10°C. until examined. In no case shall samples be tested after 30 hours of collection.
