Brain Injury Awareness Month
The Texas HHS brain injury program will host their free annual conference on March 29. The conference provides information about connecting to a diverse group of people, resources, and the importance of these connections along the pathway to recovery. Continuing education credits for multiple disciplines will be offered.
The DSHS EMS and Trauma Registries collects statewide reportable event data on brain injuries. You can submit a data request from the DSHS Injury Prevention Unit for more information.

UT-CONNECT Data Fellow Opportunity
The window to submit projects to the UT-CONNECT Program's Summer 2024 cohort is now open. The CONNECT program matches its fellows with project-based, consulting opportunities. It seeks to activate learning from data and build both capacity and interest in greater data, measurement and evaluation capacity within community organizations. The application deadline is Friday, March 15.

Private Funding Announcements
Walmart: Spark Good Local Grants (March 1 - April 15, 2024)
Grants to address the unique needs of the communities where Walmart operates in the United States. Grants are provided to organizations that operate locally and directly benefit the service area of local facilities in U.S. communities where Walmart stores, Sam’s Clubs, and distribution centers are located. Grants support a variety of organizations, such as animal shelters, elder services, and community clean-up projects. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations; state or local government entities, including law enforcement or fire departments; K-12 public or nonprofit private schools, charter schools, and higher education institutions; and churches or other faith-based organizations with a proposed project that benefits the community at large, such as food pantries, soup kitchens, and clothing closets. Award: $250 - $5,000. Geographic Scope: Communities with Walmart stores, Sam's Clubs, and distribution centers
Fisher House Foundation: Fisher Service Award (March 21, 2024)
Recognizes, awards, and celebrates innovative programs that support and strengthen military and veteran communities. The focus is on new or innovative programs improve the quality of life for active duty, reserve, or National Guard members or veterans and their families. Award funding may be used to execute any necessary program expense, including wages/salaries, supplies, capital campaigns, building repair, and professional fees (for example, mental health counselors, physical therapists, etc.). Award: $250,000 divided among top nonprofit applicants and an advertising package valued at $50,000 from Military Times. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Home Depot Foundation: Veteran Housing Grants Program (March 22, 2024)
Awards for nonprofits engaged in new construction and rehabilitation of multifamily, permanent supportive housing for veterans. Priority given to "large" cities, defined by the foundation as populations of more than 300,000 people. Award: $100,000 - $500,000. Geographic Scope: Houston has been identified as the specific focus for Texas
Imagine Learning Foundation: Signature Grant Program (March 29, 2024)
Aims to bridge connections between classroom learning and positive learning environments outside the classroom by promoting and expanding access to social and emotional learning (SEL) at home and in the community. Two funding priorities: well-being outside the classroom and education/community research. Eligible applicants include nonprofits. Award: $50,000 - $100,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Episcopal Foundation of Dallas (March 31, 2024)
Support for organizations and programs that are focused on mission-related projects, social outreach, and other creative programs that engage the Episcopal community while simultaneously strengthening the community and improving lives, especially children, and which support basic human needs in food insecurity, homelessness, poverty, and health insecurity. Award: $2,000 - $25,000. Geographic Scope: Bowie, Camp, Cass, Collin, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Franklin, Grayson, Henderson, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, Morris, Navarro, Rains, Red River, Rockwall, Titus, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood Counties
Truist Community Grants (March 31 and July 31, 2024)
Investing in innovative nonprofits that align with two key areas of focus: building career pathways to economic mobility and strengthening small businesses. The Foundation supports needs that are sustainable and does not commit funds to recurring expenditures. Examples include funding for a new program launch, a curriculum to expand or strengthen a program, equipment to deliver a program, and capital needs. Award: No set amount or average grant size. The minimum grant is $5,000. Grant amounts are based on the strength of the program and how many people it impacts as well as how it aligns with our pillars and mission. Giving amounts build as the Foundation builds a relationship with the grantee. Gamma Mu Foundation (March 31, 2024)
The mission of the Gamma Mu Foundation is to make a positive difference in the lives of the LGBT community, primarily in rural and other underserved populations of the United States. Grants are awarded in the following program areas: HIV/AIDS Services, Community Services, and Research and Public Education. Resources are targeted in rural areas and or underserved areas. Award: $1,500 - $10,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Fayette Community Foundation: Rural Community Health Fund Grant (April 15, 2024)
Funding to support community-based organizations, resident-led community networks, and grassroots initiatives that align with grant program's mission and objectives. Priority given to projects that address disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, with a particular focus on marginalized rural populations and vulnerable communities. Award: $1,000 to $25,000. Geographic Scope: Bastrop, Caldwell, East Williamson, and Hays Counties
Genentech Health Equity Innovation Fund (April 15, 2024)
Funds for organizations that address inequities in patient outcomes and ethnic inequities in healthcare. Specific interest in applications in therapeutic areas of neuroscience and brain health, oncology, ophthalmology, and cardiovascular and metabolic disease. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, government agencies, public schools, public colleges and universities, and public hospitals. Organizations can submit multiple applications. Award: More than 100 awards of up to $750,000 each. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Organization for Autism Research: Community Grant Competition (April 22, 2024)
This competition recognizes the expertise of community members and aims to empower community stakeholders, such as autistic individuals, family members, and community organizations, to share their knowledge in order to improve health outcomes for autistic people. Awards will support the development of a practical tool that can positively impact the health of autistic individuals, either directly or indirectly. Award: Up to seven grants of $1,000 - $10,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Foundation for Financial Planning (April 30, 2024)
Annual grants to community-based and national nonprofit organizations for programs linking volunteer financial planners to people in need. Eligible programs must engage Certified Financial Planner™ professionals as volunteers, include one-on-one engagements between financial planner volunteers and pro bono clients, and help people in need of financial guidance or in a financial crisis who are underserved by the market and couldn't ordinarily access quality, ethical advice. U.S.-based nonprofits that share FFP's commitment to helping underserved people achieve better financial stability and capability are eligible to apply. Award: $5,000 - $40,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Mary Kay Ash Foundation: Domestic Violence Shelter Grant Program (April 30, 2024)
Awards grants to shelters across the country providing critical, life-saving services to women and children seeking safety from an abusive situation. Award: $20,000 to at least one domestic violence shelter in every state. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
All Kids Play: Youth Sports Grants (Rolling Basis)
Provides funding to families and communities who lack the resources to pay for youth sports. Grants are available to qualifying families with kids in grade K-12, government-run programs, and not-for-profit community-based recreational sports organizations in low-income areas on a need and first-come, first served basis as funds are available. Individual grants can be used for registration, equipment and other associated fees for sports classes, recreational leagues, and travel sports. Complete online contact form to start the process. Ben & Jerry’s Foundation: National Grassroots Organizing Grant Program (Rolling Basis through October 2024)
Program offers two-year unrestricted, general operating support grants to small, constituent-led grassroots organizations throughout the United States and its territories. Support is provided to organizations that are led by people working to help themselves and their communities create progressive change through organizing campaigns and movement building efforts aimed at dismantling systems of oppression and the legacies of white supremacy culture. Applicants must be nonprofits, have an annual operating budget under $350,000, use grassroots, base-building organizing campaigns as the primary strategy for creating social change. Award: Up to $30,000 per year. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Kroger Foundation Community Gift Requests (Rolling Basis)
Focus on supporting community needs today and finding innovative solutions to help end hunger tomorrow. Employee contributions take several forms – financial contributions and donations of gift cards and products. Support is limited to hunger relief, sustainability, direct response and disaster relief, education and youth development, and support for military service members and veterans. Award: Varies by request and store location. Geographic Scope: Texas store locations
Leland Fikes Foundation (Rolling Basis, Letter of Intent)
The Foundation supports the local community though a variety of social service organizations addressing community needs such as housing, food, employment, and physical and mental health. Applicants should be prepared to share how racial equity informs their program development and implementation. Award: $5,000 - $150,000. Geographic Scope: Texas, with emphasis on Dallas area
Milbank Foundation (Rolling Basis)
Current priorities include community-based initiatives that empower people with disabilities, rehabilitation of veterans, helping seniors age in place, patient-centered health care reform, and programs that address mental health issues and present substance abuse and suicide. Letter of Intent required as first step in application through online platform. Award: Varies. 2022 awards ranged from $10,000 - $500,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Shelton Family Foundation (Rolling Basis)
Funds for organizations engaged in basic human services, education, health, and community development. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, government entities, K-12 schools, community/junior colleges and universities, and faith-based organizations with programs that benefit the community at large. Applications are reviewed twice per year. Award: $500 - $100,000. Geographic Scope: West Central Texas with emphasis on Abilene
T-Mobile Hometown Grants Program (Rolling Basis)
Grants program to help build stronger, more prosperous small towns and rural communities. Examples of eligible projects include but are not limited to adaptive uses of older and historic buildings into community gathering spaces, improvements to outdoor parks or trails, and technology projects for the public library. Additional examples include art and community centers, and a variety of outdoor spaces. Eligible applicants include elected officials, town managers and employees, tribal leaders, and nonprofit community leaders from small towns with populations of less than 50,000. Requests are reviewed quarterly. Award: Up to $50,000 each for up to 100 towns each year for five years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide

HHS: Family and Youth Services and Supports Community Services Grant (March 20, 2024)
HHS0014132. Accepting applications for a Community Services Grant Project to connect individuals in need with community crisis pregnancy services, foster care outreach services, and community services. The project must target the following counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller. Award: One award of up to $5,000,000 for one year. Geographic Scope: Greater Houston area
DOL: Pathway Home 5 Grants (April 4, 2024)
Funds to provide eligible incarcerated individuals in men’s and women’s state correctional facilities or local or county jails with workforce services prior to release and to continue services after release by transitioning the participants into reentry programs in the communities to which they will return. By providing for reentry services to begin while participants are still incarcerated and to continue post-release, these projects are designed to eliminate the time gap between release from prison and enrollment into a workforce development reentry program leading to skills-based employment, to improve individuals’ transition back into their communities, and to reduce recidivism. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, government entities, and Native American tribal organizations. Award: Approximately 20 grants of $1,000,000 - $4,000,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
DOJ: Sexual Assault Services Culturally Specific Grant Program (April 4, 2024)
Funds to establish, maintain, and expand sustainable, culturally appropriate services that address the unique needs and challenges of victims of sexual assault from culturally specific communities. Interventions and assistance may include 24-hour hotline services; accompaniment and advocacy through medical, criminal justice, and social support systems; crisis intervention; information and referral; outreach activities for underserved communities; and development and distribution of materials. Planning grants are also available. Eligible applicants include private, nonprofit organizations with the primary purpose of providing culturally specific services to American Indians, Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders, Blacks, and Hispanics. Award: Up to 20 awards of $300,000 - $375,000 for projects of up to 36 months. Up to 4 Planning grants for up to $100,000 for projects of up to 24 months. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
CDC: Drug-Free Communities Support Program (April 17, 2024)
Funds for community-based coalitions addressing youth substance abuse that have not yet previously received a grant for this program. Award: 100 awards for up to $125,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
USDA: Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants (April 29, 2024)
Grants to help rural communities use advanced telecommunications technology to connect each other and the world, overcoming the efforts of remoteness and low population density. Rural communities are defined as communities with populations of 20,000 or fewer. A minimum 15% match is required and cannot come from another federal source. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, federally recognized tribes, nonprofits, for-profit businesses, and groups of eligible entities working together. Award: $50,000 - $1,000,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
USDA: Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program Competitive Grants (May 14, 2024)
Funds to support projects that will increase the purchase of fruit and vegetables among low-income consumers who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by providing incentives at the point of purchase. Projects that serve underrepresented geographies and communities are encouraged. Eligible applicants include government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Award: Varies by project type from $100,000 - more than $500,000 for one to four years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
NIMH: Technology Development to Reduce Health Disparities (May 2, 2025)
Funds to develop and translate medical technologies aimed at reducing disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes. Medical technologies should be effective, affordable, culturally acceptable, and deliverable to those who need them. Priority health disparity populations include racial and ethnic minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals, sexual and gender minorities, and medically underserved populations in rural and urban areas. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, governments, independent school districts, public housing authorities, small businesses, and for profit organizations. Award: Three to four awards of up to $500,000 per year for four years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide

National Nutrition Month
Every March, registered dietitians celebrate National Nutrition Month®! Throughout March, health and nutrition professionals share their knowledge and tips with patients, clients, family, friends, and the community to increase awareness about the importance of good nutrition. Nutrition.gov has resources that can help people of all ages make healthier food choices and live an active lifestyle.
The DSHS Medical and Research Library has identified several nutrition-related websites that may be of interest to dietitians, nutrition professionals, and interns on the Nutrition Resources page.
DSHS 2024 Summer Internships
The DSHS Internship Program is now accepting applications for the Summer 2024 semester. Internships are offered three times a year: spring, summer, and fall, aligning with the academic calendar. They are offered in a variety of public health focuses from epidemiology to health promotion to data analysis and more. The program also features professional development opportunities including mock interviews, meeting with a DSHS executive, regional health department visits, and a DSHS laboratory tour. Applications are open now- apply through our website.

Comer Family Foundation (May 1, 2024)
Support is provided through the Foundation's Syringe Service Program, which seeks to improve the health and wellness of people affected by drug use. RedRover Relief: Domestic Violence Safe Housing Grants (June 1, 2024)
Funds to help survivors of domestic violence by removing a barrier to safety and allowing pets and people to escape abuse together. Funding is available to nonprofit domestic violence and animal organizations to build or renovate spaces dedicated to housing survivors’ pets, begin a foster program to care for survivors’ pets, pay for temporary boarding for survivors’ pets, or a combination of services that will best serve the community. Grant funds may also be used for routine veterinary care, emergency veterinary care, and pet deposits. Award: Up to $60,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
C&S Wholesale Grocers Corporate Giving Mini Grants Program (Rolling Basis, First Day of Each Month)
Accepts requests from community groups located within 20 miles of their warehouses. Requests are reviewed and decided upon by local C&S employees who understand local needs and who are involved in the community. Funds for programs that address hunger, children, and the environment. Award: Cash up to $1,000 and food/product donations. Geographic Scope: Dallas and Houston
Entergy Charitable Foundation: Open Grants and Micro Grants (Rolling Basis)
Supports initiatives that help create and sustain thriving communities. Funding interests include poverty solutions, environmental programs, and education/workforce development. Support is provided through two programs: Open Grants and Micro Grants. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, schools, and government agencies. Award: Up to $1,000 for Micro Grants. DOJ: Second Chance Act Pay for Success Initiative (April 25, 2024)
Grants to provide services and programs through performance- or outcomes-based contracts to improve reentry, reduce recidivism, and address the treatment and recovery needs of people with mental health, substance use, or co-occurring disorders who are currently or were formerly involved in the criminal justice system. The program allows government entities to form partnerships with service providers that tie payment for services to reaching agreed-upon goals. Award: Six awards for up to $1,000,000 each for 54 months. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
SAMHSA: Building Communities of Recovery Grants (April 29, 2024)
Grants to support the development, enhancement, expansion, and delivery of recovery support services and recovery education for individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental disorders. Rural populations are a priority. Award: 20 awards of up to $300,000 each per year for three years. A cash or in-kind matching contribution of no less than $15 for each $85 of federal funds received is required. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
HRSA: Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Part F Dental Reimbursement Program (April 30, 2024)
Funding designed to improve access to oral healthcare services for low-income people with HIV, and to train dental students, dental hygiene students, and dental residents to deliver dental care to people with HIV. Funding may be used to reimburse certain costs related to providing uncompensated or partially uncompensated oral health care to low-income people with HIV from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023 at accredited dental or dental hygiene education programs recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Eligible participants are dental schools and other accredited dental education programs, such as dental hygiene programs or those sponsored by a school of dentistry, a hospital, or a public or private institution that offers postdoctoral training in the specialties of dentistry, advanced education in general dentistry, or a dental general practice residency. DFPS: Community-Based Care Single Source Continuum Contractor (May 1, 2024)
HHS0013421. Community-based care services in a proposed community that includes support services to all Children and families that support the safety, permanency, and well-being of Children in its legal conservatorship. DFPS sees a service delivery model that fully engages communities in serving Children, Youth, and families provided through a performance-based Single Source Continuum Contract (SSCC) as the approach that can most effectively meet this need in a manner that achieves improved outcomes for Children in its conservatorship. The SSCC provider must ensure the full continuum of substitute care (foster and kinship care), purchased services, case management and reunification services for Children and Youth in DFPS legal conservatorship from the designated geographic proposed community, those placed in the proposed community through the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC), and through interregional agreements. Eligible applicants include nonprofits and government agencies that have an organizational mission focused on child welfare services. Award: One per catchment area. Amounts vary by catchment area. FORHP: Rural Communities Opioid Response Program – Impact (May 6, 2024)
Grant to improve access to integrated and coordinated treatment and recovery services for substance use disorder, including opioid use disorder, for people living in rural areas. Program goals include service delivery, workforce, supportive services, and sustainability. Proposals must address all four goals. Eligible applicants include public and private institutions of higher learning; nonprofits; state governments; county, city, township, and special district governments; independent school districts; and tribal governments and tribal organizations. Award: 16 awards of up to $750,000 per year for four years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
USDA: Farmers Market Promotion Program (May 14, 2024)
Grants for projects that assist in the development, coordination, and expansion of domestic farmers markets, roadside stands, community‐supported agriculture programs, agritourism activities, and other direct producer‐to‐consumer market opportunities. STI Awareness Week (April 14 - 20, 2024) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and how they impact our lives. Learn more about the CDC's 2024 campaign, including a toolkit and general resources.
The DSHS HIV/STD Program is dedicated to preventing the spread of HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) while minimizing complications and costs. Grants.gov Monthly Maintenance

The Texas Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for the fiscal year 2024 Texas Rural Hospital Broadband Infrastructure Program. The purpose of this program is to help rural Texas hospitals with broadband and connectivity improvement efforts. Award: Project funding is received on a cost-reimbursement basis during the term of the grant agreement. Selected applicants must have the financial capacity to pay all costs up-front. HRSA: Opioid-Impacted Family Support Program (May 6, 2024)
Supports training programs that increase the skills and knowledge of peer support specialists and other behavioral health-related paraprofessionals who provide services to families affected by opioid use disorders and other substance use disorders. Additionally, the program focuses on supporting children and adolescents in high-need and high-demand areas who have experienced trauma and are at risk for mental health disorders. DOE: Mental Health Service Professional Demonstration Grant Program (May 15, 2024)
Federal grants for innovative partnerships to train school-based mental health services providers. Small, rural schools fall under the definition of high-need local education agencies, and partnerships with historically Black colleges and universities, tribal colleges and universities, and other minority-serving institutions are a program priority. HRSA: Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program (May 29, 2024)

CMS: Minority Research Grant Program (June 3, 2024)

BJA: Community-based Approach to Prevent and Address Hate Crime (June 4, 2024)
Funding to support comprehensive community-based approaches to addressing hate crimes that promote community awareness and preparedness, increase victim reporting, and improve responses to hate crimes. The program is also designed to develop community-informed models for preventing and responding to hate speech and incidents, as well as facilitating reconciliation and community healing. SAMHSA: Addiction Technology Transfer Centers Cooperative Agreements (June 10, 2024)
The purpose of this program is to develop and strengthen the specialized behavioral healthcare and primary healthcare workforce that provides substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery support services. Recipients will be expected to: accelerate the adoption and implementation of evidence-based, culturally informed, and promising SUD treatment and recovery-oriented practices and services; heighten the awareness, knowledge, and skills of the workforce that addresses the needs of people with substance use or other co-occurring health disorders; and foster regional and national alliances among culturally diverse practitioners, researchers, policymakers, funders, and the recovery community. AHRQ: Small Health Services Research Grants (R03) (June 16, 2024)
R03 health services research grants provide flexibility for initiating studies for preliminary or short-term projects. These grants are non-renewable. Some examples include pilot or feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. Cost sharing is not required. Award: Up to $100,000 total costs for a period not to exceed two years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
