This page contains information on continuing education for all registrations, permits, and licenses issued by the regulatory boards and programs of the Professional Licensing and Certification Unit which may be renewed through Texas Online. Each section also contains a link to the text of relevant board or program rules on the State of Texas web site.

Social Worker
A licensee must complete a total of 30 clock-hours of continuing education biennially obtained from board approved continuing education providers. As part of the required 30 clock-hours, a licensee must complete a minimum of six clock-hours of continuing education in professional ethics and social work values during the biennial renewal period. (22 Texas Administrative Code §781.508)

Professional Counselor
Continuing education requirements for renewal shall be fulfilled during a 24-month period beginning on the first day of a licensee's renewal year and ending on the last day of the licensee's renewal year. A licensee must complete 24 clock-hours of continuing education acceptable to the board during each 24 month period. A licensee must complete at least four hours of continuing education directly related to counselor ethics issues each renewal period. Completion of the Texas Jurisprudence Exam will count as one hour of continuing education in counselor ethics. (22 Texas Administrative Code §681.141)

Athletic Trainer
A licensee must complete 20 clock-hours of continuing education during each two-year period. In addition to the 20 clock-hours of continuing education, a licensee must also successfully complete a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques course and an automated external defibrillation course during each two-year period. The two-year period begins on the first day following the license issuance month and ends upon the expiration date of the license. (22 Texas Administrative Code §871.12)

Dietitian
A licensee shall complete a minimum of 12 continuing education hours during each two-year licensing period. The hours must be offered or approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration or its agents or a regionally accredited college or university. One hour of continuing education credit will be granted for successful completion of the Texas Jurisprudence Exam. (22 Texas Administrative Code §711.17)

Perfusionist
The continuing education required to maintain current certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) meets licensing requirements. Licensed perfusionists who are not certified by the ABCP should consult the rules of the board at 25 Texas Administrative Code §140.13

Marriage and Family Therapist
A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist must complete 30 clock hours of continuing education acceptable to the board each renewal period. A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate must complete 15 clock hours of continuing education acceptable to the board each renewal period. All licensees are required to complete 6 hours of ethics each renewal period. A board-approved supervisor must complete at least 3 hours of clinical supervision education each renewal period. completing the jurisprudence examination may count for one hour of the ethics requirement. (22 Texas Administrative Code §801.263)

Sex Offender Treatment Provider
All renewal applicants shall acquire by the end of the 2-year cycle, a minimum of 24 hours of documented continuing education. Six hours shall be in ethics and 18 shall be in sex offender assessment and treatment of which 6 hours may be in sexual assault victim-related training. (22 Texas Administrative Code §810.4)

Fitter and Dispenser of Hearing Instruments
The committee shall require that a licensed fitter and dispenser complete 20 contact hours of continuing education each year. Online courses offered by an approved sponsor and courses sponsored by a manufacturer may not make up more than 5 contact hours of the required 20 contact hours. At least 15 contact hours of the required 20 contact hours must be obtained from the acceptable continuing education categories offered by an approved non-manufacturer sponsor. (22 Texas Administrative Code §141.14)

Medical Physicist
A licensee must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education acceptable to the board within a 24-month period. Continuing education requirements for license renewal shall be fulfilled biennially on or before the expiration of the license. (22 Texas Administrative Code §601.20)

Speech-Language Pathologist and Audiologist
Ten clock hours (one CEU) shall be required for yearly renewal. The holder of dual licenses, meaning both a speech-language pathology license and an audiology license, shall be required to earn 15 (1.5 CEUs) clock hours annually. Initial licensees must complete prorated continuing education as described in the board rules. (22 Texas Administrative Code §741.162)

Orthotist and Prosthetist
Attendance and completion of the following number of continuing education credits are required:
(a) prosthetist or orthotist license - 24
(b) prosthetist and orthotist license 40
(c) prosthetist or orthotist assistant - 12
(d) prosthetist and orthotist assistant - 20
(e) prosthetic or orthotic technician - 6
(f) prosthetic and orthotic technician - 10
(g) prosthetist with orthotist assistant or orthotist with prosthetist assistant license--32.

Massage Therapist
Each registered massage therapist must report completion of at least 12 hours of acceptable continuing education accumulated during each two renewal period. (25 Texas Administrative Code §140.320)

Respiratory Care Practitioner
A respiratory care practitioner must complete 24 hours of continuing education acceptable to the department during each renewal period. (25 Texas Administrative Code §140.210)

Medical Radiologic Technologist
An MRT must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education acceptable to the department during each biennial renewal period. An LMRT must complete 12 contact hours of continuing education acceptable to the department during each biennial renewal period. The continuing education activities must be general radiation health and safety topics or related to the categories of limited certificate held. At least 3 hours of the required number of hours shall be satisfied by attendance and participation in instructor-directed activities. No more than 21 hours for MRTs or 9 hours for LMRTs of the required number of hours may be satisfied through verifiable independent self-study. An NCT must complete 6 hours of continuing education acceptable to the department during the biennial renewal period. (25 Texas Administrative Code §140.511)

Optician
Proof of having earned ten contact hours of continuing education credit in each area for which the registrant is renewing shall be required at the time of renewal for each registration issued for a two-year term. For a registered spectacle dispensing optician the hours must be offered or approved by the American Board of Opticianry. For a registered contact lens dispenser the hours must be offered or approved by the National Contact Lens Examiners. If applying for dual registration renewal the applicant must have a total of 20 contact hours of continuing education for a registration issued for a two-year term. Half of the contact hours must be offered or approved by the American Board of Opticianry and half of the contact hours must be offered or approved by the National Contact Lens Examiners. (25 Texas Administrative Code §140.281)

Contact Lens Dispenser
Continuing education is not required to renew a contact lens dispensing permit.

Code Enforcement Officer
Each registered code enforcement officer and code enforcement officer in training must obtain and show proof of not less than six continuing education hours within the twelve months preceding renewal of a registration issued for one year, or not less than 12 continuing education hours within the 24 months preceding renewal of a registration issued for two years, at least one hour of which must be in legal/legislative issues. (25 Texas Administrative Code §140.168)

Sanitarian
Each registered sanitarian must obtain and show proof of not less than 24 continuing education contact hours related to the fields of consumer health, environmental health or sanitation taken within the 24 months preceding renewal for a registration issued for a two-year term. (25 Texas Administrative Code §140.113)

Midwife
A midwife's application for redocumentation must include proof of completion of at least 20 contact hours of approved continuing midwifery education since previous renewal. A current CPR card and current Neonatal Resuscitation card are also required. (22 Texas Administrative Code §831.14)

Personal Emergency Response System Provider
Continuing education is not required in order to renew a license or registration as a Personal Emergency Response System Provider.
