Students Gather at the Capitol to Highlight Red Ribbon Week

WHAT: 2011 Texas Red Ribbon Rally

WHEN: 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011

WHERE: Texas State Capitol, South Steps

DETAILS: Nearly 1,000 fifth- and sixth-graders will meet at the State Capitol in advance of Red Ribbon Week, a series of local and community events across the country aimed at helping students and parents understand the dangers of drug abuse. The students will gather on the Capitol grounds and walk to the south steps for a rally that includes music and dance performances and a pledge to remain drug free. At 12:30 p.m. they will convene a mock legislative session in the Texas House and Senate chambers to pass resolutions targeting drug and alcohol abuse. Red Ribbon Week is observed nationally Oct. 22-30.

VISUALS: Performances by the Texas Children’s Choir and HYPE, a San Antonio youth troupe that encourages teens to stay drug and alcohol free with original hip-hop choreography. Students passing resolutions in a mock legislative session.
