WHAT: Breast Cancer Awareness Event

SPEAKERS: Dr. David L. Lakey, commissioner, Texas Department of State Health Services
Dr. Rebecca Garcia, chief prevention officer, Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas
Rose Batson, breast cancer survivor and president of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Texas
Babette Bennett, breast cancer survivor and honorary race chair for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Austin Affiliate
DETAILS: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Texas. This year more than 15,000 women in Texas will be diagnosed with breast cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths among women between the ages of 40 and 60. Experts will discuss the importance of breast cancer awareness and highlight prevention and early detection as the best protection.
VISUALS: In memory of a loved one, survivors will place flowers in front of a large wreath featured on the steps of the Capitol. A reception will be held in the Lieutenant Governor’s Reception Room following remarks.
PARTNERS: Texas Department of State Health Services, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Austin Affiliate and the American Cancer Society.
